Do you have a head for numbers and a heart for queer culture?
Do you enjoy keeping an eye on the bigger financial picture, asking the right questions and safeguarding the foundation's health, without needing to be in the day-to-day details yourself?
Ballroom Works is looking for a treasurer to join our board and help oversee our growing organisation's finances.
About Ballroom Works
Ballroom Works supports ballroom culture; a culture created by Black and Latinx queer and trans people as a place to be seen, celebrated, and supported. We contribute to the development of people in the ballroom scene by creating safer spaces where queer and trans people of color feel at home, uplift each other, and can shine.
We do this by organising weekly classes and workshops, community events, talent development trajectories, and special projects that bring people together and support their creativity.
Our organisation is professionalising: day-to-day operations are led by our artistic leader/founder together with a business leader (zakelijk leider), who form the organisation's operational leadership. As treasurer, you join the board, contributing financial insight and a critical eye at board level.
What you’ll do
As treasurer, you’ll join the board of Ballroom Works.
Your responsibilities include:
- Financial oversight & governance: Monitoring the foundation's overall financial position and ensuring sound financial governance, in line with the multi-year budget and coverage plan.
- Preparing & presenting financial information: Preparing the annual accounts, quarterly reports, and project budgets (created by the business leader) for board meetings, and presenting the foundation's financial reality in a way that enables the board to make an informed decision.
- Financial strategy: Helping shape the foundation's financial strategy and long-term sustainability together with the business leader and the rest of the board, including new revenue streams.
- Grants & funders: Reviewing financial reports and budgets for grant applications and accountability reports before submission, and providing input where needed.
- Compliance: Monitoring the foundation's obligations towards the Dutch Tax Authority (Belastingdienst) and ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place.
- Overseeing implementation: Overseeing the implementation of board decisions that have a financial component.
- Other board duties: Taking on other tasks that come with board membership, as they arise.
Don’t worry if you don’t tick every box. Some financial knowledge is useful, but you’ll have the chance to learn and grow into the role.
Time commitment
- Board meetings: once per quarter.
- Ongoing tasks: 2-4 hours per month on average (a bit more during grant deadlines or year-end).
What we’re looking for
- Experience with bookkeeping, financial management, accounting, or a related field.
- Comfortable reviewing financial reports and budgets.
- Affinity with the ballroom scene and our mission.
- A strategic mindset and interest in nonprofit governance and solid financial structures.
What you’ll gain
This role gives you the opportunity to:
- Make real impact: contribute directly to the visibility and empowerment of queer and trans communities.
- Work closely with others: collaborate with the business leader and fellow board members in a supportive environment.
- Grow your skills: gain experience in financial oversight, nonprofit governance, and strategy.
- Expand your network: meet new people in the queer scene and the wider cultural sector.
- Be part of something bigger: join a movement that is actively reshaping culture and community.
This is a voluntary position.
