About this event
Let's Kii!
In this panel talk Fergie Basquiat, Sharmila 007, and The Real Miss Colombia Mermaids will discuss how gender, sexuality, class, and ethnicity interact to create unique combinations of both privilege and discrimination. This interaction between identities is called intersectionality. Moderated by Andrea 007, they will target questions such as; Do you see your ethnicity and queerness as two separate parts of your identity? How do they affect each other?
We also talk about the history of Pride not only as celebration but also of protest, and what it means to celebrate Pride in today’s social climate. They will discuss issues like what we as queer community defend, what is and is not our ‘responsibility’, the joy and grief of Pride, and the importance of community building. There will be space for questions or personal anecdotes from audience members throughout the talk.
Finally, the panel will dive into how ballroom comes into play as a space of community, self-discovery, resistance, and above all, a home for LGBTQIA+ people (of color) amidst the chaos. But also here intersectionality can be analyzed. They will discuss the history and definition of ballroom, what it means to be oneself in ballroom, in what ways ballroom challenges mainstream ideals, but also how ballroom has room to evolve into a more inclusive space itself.
After the panel talk, there will be an afterparty with DJ (The Real Miss Colombia Mermaids) and MC (Sharmila 007) keeping the energy high. There will be space for talking, partying, and hanging out with the community. Come join us for an educational and social evening with the ballroom scene!
