Celebrating Ballroom Culture

About this event

Voguing emerged from the ballroom culture in Harlem, New York from the 1960s throughout the 1980s. Ballroom culture was originally created by the Black and Latino LGBTQ-community to create a safe space in which they could freely express themselves and feel a sense of belonging.

Old Way is one of the three main performance categories of Voguing, and was the original style, characterised by the formation of lines, symmetry, and shapes inspired by fashion poses, Egyptian hieroglyphs and martial arts.

The Old Way classes are taught by Suzume 007. She is half Filipina/half Belgian, a dance mentor, performer, choreographer, and ballroom community member, raised and formed in Brussels, Belgium. She discovered the ballroom scene in 2012 during its first happenings in Paris and Amsterdam under the wings of Katerina Ourda and Lynn Ninja and in 2016 she walked her first ball.

Suzume now represents the performance category Pop, Dip and Spin. Inspired by the early, gorgeous femme queens, Suzume developed a vulnerable and soft, yet strong and dynamic performance. Over the years she has won several Grand Prizes in Belgium, France, The Netherlands and Germany and travelled around Europe to teach and judge in service of the community.
