Consent, Safety & Support: A Panel Talk

About this event
How can we create safer environments where queer and trans people of color can express themselves, build relationships and feel supported? And what happens when someone's boundaries are crossed?
This panel discussion brings together members of the ballroom community and professionals that work in victim support, policing and online safety. Together, we will discuss how boundary violations can be recognised, how we can support one another, and what options are available to those seeking help.
Particular attention will be given to the diverse experiences of trans and gender-diverse people. This includes trans men, trans women, and the barriers that can make seeking support difficult.
Through an open conversation moderated by Dione Hoost, we aim to share practical knowledge and explore how individuals, communities, and institutions can contribute to safety, accountability & care.
Meet the panelists
Luluh Amaru Calloway: House Leader and Ballroom Community Organiser
A woman of trans experience and house leader involved in organising the T4T days; Luluh will share perspectives on safety within the ballroom community, giving her experience on chosen family, house leader responsibilities. Luluh will, at the same time, highlight the importance of recognising and respecting diverse gender identities and their experiences.
Iris Lokerse: Policy Advisor, Slachtofferhulp Nederland
Representing Slachtofferhulp Nederland (Victim Support Netherlands), Iris will contribute perspectives on support following sexual misconduct, recovery, victim-blaming and the barriers people may face when seeking help.
Delano Morsink: Roze in Blauw
Delano will bring another perspective to the discussion: addressing reporting procedures, interactions with survivors, and the accessibility of police services for queer and trans people.
Jason 007: Offlimits
Representing Offlimits, Jason will contribute perspectives on online safety, digital boundaries, online manipulation, blackmail and support in situations involving the non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
What will we discuss?
The conversation will explore the following themes: consent and bodily autonomy; power imbalances and financial vulnerability; safety within and beyond the Ballroom community; the why to the distrust of existing institutions, and online sexual misconduct.
We will also consider what people can do when their boundaries have been crossed, including options for seeking support without immediately deciding to file a police report.
A volunteer will be available during the event for anyone who needs support or a quiet moment. After the discussion, you can approach the participating organisations and professionals to learn more about available support.
