ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

The Community Day is a recurring gathering for everyone connected to or curious about: The Ballroom Scene. It's a full day designed around one simple idea: connecting with each other.

The event brings the community through different modes of the day. Workshops offer a space to learn and move, led by experienced figures from the scene, whether you're just starting out or have been walking for years. A shared dinner slows things down and makes room for the conversations that matter. And the evening closes with a mini kiki: a low-key, playful function that strips things back to what ballroom is really about: having fun, showing up, and being seen.

A mini kiki is exactly what it sounds like. Smaller in scale than a full ball, but no less real. Categories, a panel, an MC, a DJ; the full energy, without the production weight. It's where the scene gets to breathe.

Community Days are open to everyone: newcomers finding their footing, regulars who've been around the block, and anyone in between. There's no single way to participate. Come for the whole day or just the function. Bring your people or come alone and find them there.

The dress code changes each edition, usually tied to a theme or the season, but the throughline is always the same: bring it.

Participant Experiences

“Ballroom gave me the space to fully embrace who I am through the expression of my gender, my fashion, and my self-worth in general. I thank ballroom for the person I am today and for the community it has given me.”

“Utrecht Ballroom Scene is a place where I feel safe and can express myself as a trans woman. It gave me a close-knit community when I first arrived in the Netherlands alone. Ballroom makes me a better person.”

Anonymous

“Being surrounded by like-minded people, especially other queer people of color, helped me understand and develop my identity and self-expression in a safer way. Ballroom has given me more confidence in myself and my abilities. Through the community activities and classes, it has significantly improved both my mental and physical health. Ballroom gave me the will to live and to want more for myself.”
